When one takes the test, they must fill out an Application for Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) form. The form is available from the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). Once an Application is completed, it must be submitted along with payment and a copy of the borrower’s legal declaration. The third step is to take a Becoming a Legal Assistant test. This exam, also known as the Bench Warrant Examination, is administered by the State Board of License Attorneys. Those wishing to become Lancers in the state of Maryland must first take and pass this exam. Failure to pass this exam, or the application and payment being denied, will result in someone applying to take the next available exam in the future, known as the 2021 Legal Assistant Exam.
Students who successfully complete all three steps will receive a certificate. Anyone who does not pass the Bench Warrant Examination, or has it rejected, will have to take the Becoming a Legal Assistant class again in order to apply for certification. Once someone passes the Bench Warrant Examination they will be able to take the Becoming a Legal Assistant class to obtain their certificate. Students taking the examination must be 16 years of age or older. Students may also be required to take a background check in order to find out any criminal records.
Students can obtain their test results online. Students should check the examiners report before applying for any certification. Students who passed the preliminary exam must wait at least 90 days before applying for the official exam. Students may also be required to pay a fee for the written exam. The fee is not assessed until the certification test is issued.

Law school graduates should contact their law school deans and request information on the application requirements.
