Take the GIA License Examination Under Law School Rules

Examination in Law (ERL): Definition, duration and qualification. The English version known as ‘Exam Law’ is a nationally recognized examination for those who want to practice law in Singapore after passing the Law Society examination. The EFL consists of five main parts of practical testing: civil procedure, criminal law, family law, administrative law and contract law. This examination can be taken by candidates at any stage in their law education. Candidates who successfully complete the examination will receive a National Professional Paper (NPP) and a Certificate of Acceptance. Candidates who fail to obtain an examination from an approved school or institution may still take the exam but must first take a licensing examination.

Taking an EFL examination is not easy. In case you decide to study at an approved law school, the faculty will conduct a mock exam for the incoming students before the course starts. The examination consists of two parts – a written section and an oral section. The candidates who successfully pass the examination must not only have a good command over the English language but must also have a fair grasp of the legal system of Singapore. Before enrolling in a law course, it is wise to check if the school has any reputation for facilitating easy and affordable examinations.

The format of the examination under the law is generally divided into two main types – the closed-circuit and open-circuit type. In the closed-circuit type, the candidates can attend either one or two different sitting in classrooms. They are provided with a list of the names of the two instructors for each classroom, the duration of the classes and the classroom location. Candidates are sent there according to the schedule posted by the school. The open-circuit examination is conducted in a single classroom, where there are no announcements and the candidate can participate in the examination by logging onto the Internet or attending a live class.

When taking an examination under the law school, it is important for a candidate to prepare well. In the open classroom examination, the candidates are not permitted to make notes during the session. There is no provision of chatting with friends during the session. To prepare for the examination, it is recommended that candidates read newspapers and legal journals, as much as they can, to get an idea of the basic rules and procedures followed in the court system of Singapore.

Before the examination, the candidates should ensure that they have taken part in a course that gives clear insights into the principles of the profession and the functioning of the legal system. It is important to note that all the subjects covered in a course should be studied comprehensively. Any part of the course which is not given full attention will be useless when it comes to clearing the examination.

There are many firms in Singapore which conduct such examinations on a regular basis. Candidates can pursue this profession by joining one of these firms and attending the training sessions. The candidates can also take the GIA license examination which is conducted by the Law Society of Singapore. However, most people prefer to take the CLEP examination which is a combination of writing test and oral examination.

Before sitting for the examination, one should take a pre-law course in order to familiarise him with the administrative details of the law school. This will help the candidates prepare well for the examination. Once a candidate clears the examination successfully, he is awarded the license. There are various other levels of examination conducted in various law schools and these include the bar examination, the regional board exam, the provincial board exam and the Masters of Laws.

The format of the examination differs from institution to institution. Candidates need to attend lectures at the start of the course and this is the main reason why the syllabus is quite extensive. The candidates can take the preliminary examination after completing their course and after passing the exam they become a member of the course. Most of the law schools follow the “common content” format where the candidates learn about the principles of the law while they go through the examination process.
