The Process of Becoming a Legal Document Examiner

A Legal Document Examiner is a specialized specialty certification offered by the National Law Review Association to certified legal secretaries, barristers, and other professionals who are exceptionally skilled in the application and interpretation of legal documents. Certified Legal Documents Examiners (LDEs) are testers who are hired by lawyers, paralegals and other legal professionals in all areas of the legal process from discovery through final submission to the legal courts. They are responsible for the identification and retrieval of documents and memoranda that may be required for a legal proceeding. Some LDEs work exclusively for law firms or law offices, while others work for individual clients.

During the process of taking the examination, candidates are advised to prepare adequately and to fully comprehend each question that they will be asked. For example, legal document examinations will usually cover specific areas of law such as federal, property, labor, business, divorce, landlord-tenant, patent and trademark issues. The legal system is vast and very complicated. A candidate is not likely to have all the information that he or she needs for passing the examination.

To be a successful document examiner, a person must be able to comprehend the task at hand. While many individuals are confident that they can analyze legal documents on their own, it takes training and practice in order to properly examine a document and answer questions that will be asked. Many LDEs spend extensive amounts of time shadowing lawyers, legal assistants, and paralegals in order to develop the ability to analyze a legal document without professional aid. Other individuals who wish to become a legal document examiner work in private practice, but realize that they must possess strong verbal skills in order to succeed in this profession.

To become an examiner, an individual must pass the Law and Paralegal Examination (LPE) and the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE). Both these exams measure written and verbal skills in connection with legal proceedings. Both of these exams are nationally recognized and provide a good level of confidence that one is prepared to examine legal documents. Many employers prefer to hire those individuals who have taken and passed these exams. Those individuals are also more likely to remain in a job long enough to be retained.

When becoming a legal document examiner, a person needs to be committed to spend long hours performing multiple tasks. In most cases, those individuals who perform legal document analysis spend the majority of their time in front of a computer. In order to examine legal documents, a person must be familiar with certain programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

LPE training consists of an intensive classroom lecture and a test study. Students are required to read legal documents while listening to a live legal representative. To be successful, students should be able to quickly comprehend the information and should have no problem following the lead. Although some people may be naturally highly intelligent, LPE training will not teach reading the legal document by heart. It requires the student to pay close attention, understand the meaning of each word, and learn the correct application of the legal terminology.

If you are interested in becoming a legal document examiner, you may want to look into online LPE training courses. Online courses typically provide a much more in-depth study regimen than traditional classroom sessions. In most cases, online training programs will require a small amount of training time before students can successfully complete the exam. Because of the low cost associated with LPE certification, online courses make a great alternative to traditional classrooms.

Individuals who are interested in becoming a legal document examiner will need to complete a high school diploma or GED. In addition, most positions require candidates to be physically fit. Most law offices mandate that individuals pass a physical exam before being hired. To take the examination, candidates will need to pay a fee.
